Zhao Tingren (b. 1963), styled Zishan (子山), and known by the pseudonym Qulu (蕖庐), graduated from the Art Department of Shanxi University in 1987. He studied Chinese painting under the guidance of the renowned art historian, artist, and leader of China's New Literati Painting movement, Mr. Chen Shouxian, while serving as a visiting scholar at the Chinese National Academy of Arts. Zhao has held positions as the Dean of the Calligraphy College and the Director of the Institute of Calligraphy and Painting Culture at Shanxi Normal University, as well as the Director of the Shanxi Academy of Painting. Currently, he is a member of the Shanxi Provincial Writers Association and the Honorary Chairman of the Linfen City Artists Association, recognized as an accomplished literati painter in contemporary Chinese painting. He has published several collections of calligraphy and painting. From a young age, Zhao Tingren was instructed by his grandfather to recite poetry, practice calligraphy, and paint, deeply rooting him in tradition and immersing him in life. His early works were simple and elegant, later evolving to pursue a more rustic and substantial quality, and in recent years, they have reflected a gentle and refined style. He excels in sourcing material from life drawing, is skilled in landscape, flora and fauna, and figure painting, proficient in calligraphy, adept at seal carving, and emphasizes the harmonious unity of poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal.
